Journalism

One of the vital things I learned as a young journalist, apart from essential writing and research skills, was how to tell a story, beginning by grabbing the reader’s attention and adding detail and colour as I go along. This is still something I bear in mind when I’m writing, along with the importance of making the story I’m telling relevant to the audience who are going to read it.

Deadlines, too, are still critical in my work. In newspapers, if you finish too late, your boss will be breathing down your neck about the hole left on the printed page. It’s the same in business: clients’ deadlines simply must be respected.

Journalism taught me about people as well, both how to deal with them in person, and the importance of making them the focus of all my writing. I learned many other skills, not least, as a member of the first generation to work with computers, the importance of getting the most from technology. I learned my lessons well: I even won an award for the best performance when I took the UK journalists’ Proficiency Test.
